There’s a new yoga class on JohnnyFit Online! Prana Power Chakra Flow is an intermediate class that will bring students an experiential understanding of how chakras, bandhas, mudras, and pranayama all fit together within the context of a vinyasa class. The poses in this chakra flow systematically address each chakra from root to crown.
Pranayama
Prana is described as a life force. It’s an energy that weaves among and within all living things. I feel tuned into this energy at the end of a nice savasana. You know that feeling that you have at the end of your yoga practice where you feel vibrant, empathetic, and alive? I also have this feeling when I’m somewhere beautiful in nature. I feel it when I take in the scenery of a grand vista.
Pranayama is controlled breathing that draws prana into the body.
Chakras
Prana flows through the body along energetic lines called nadis. Wheels of pranic energy are located where these nadis intersect. These wheels of energy are called chakras.
Chakras can become bound up and block the flow of prana. This happens as a result of different physical and mental activity, stimuli and stresses. Asana (yoga poses), along with methods of pranayama and Ayurveda practices can work to unblock the chakras so that prana can flow freely throughout the body.
Bandhas
Bandhas are muscular contractions within the body that are used to contain prana in order to draw strength from it. You already use bandhas in your practice whether or not you are aware of it. The three main bandhas are called mula, uddiyana, and jalandhara, and at least one of them are likely present in almost every pose that you do leading up to your resting poses.
- Mula Bandha – Pelvic floor contraction
- Uddiyana Bandha – Abdominal contraction
- Jalandhara Bandha – Throat contraction
Mudras
Mudras are often called yoga of the hands. Mudra is used to direct the flow of prana. Anjali mudra is one that you are probably already aware of and use in your practice. Anjali mudra is also called “prayer hands.” Anjali mudra is used to balance the flow of prana.
There are many different mudras, just as there are many different yoga poses. I had fun using padma mudra in a recent Instagram photo.
