Finding Your Edge: Presence

It’s said that the meaning of life is found in the journey and not the destination. I believe this to be true!

In order to make this point, we have to consider what happens when we reach a destination. In life, there is always somewhere else and something more. We never reach a point and say definitively, “This is it!” Once you reach your initial destination, a new goal appears and then you are onto a new journey. The size and scope of one’s goals do not change this. Many of our most worthwhile goals are just stepping stones that lead us to new goals, and we barely have time to rest on one before focusing on the next.

Presence

Many of us are so caught up in where we want to be, what we don’t have, and who we’re not with, that we blind ourselves to the very moment in which we are alive.

We have to open our eyes to what’s happening around us and enjoy the ride, because that, literally, is all that we have. The past is played out, never to be relived again, though hopefully we can learn from it. The future, though within our grasp, is not yet here. Any moment, once it arrives, is fleeting. Blink, and that moment too, is lost in the past.

The challenge then is in finding presence in each moment. This is the only way that we can live our lives unburdened by the past and unconcerned with events that are out of our control which have not yet occurred.

In yoga, we practice pranayama or the art of breath control. Breathing is life itself. No other actions ground you to the very present other than the simple acts of inhalation and exhalation.

By focusing on the breath and clearing our minds from all of the clutter that fills our heads, we are able to relax, sink into a pose, explore our personal limits both physically and mentally, and find our edge.

In that moment, we are present.

“When the Breath wanders, the mind is unsteady, but when the Breath is still, so is the mind still.” – Hatha Yoga Pradipika

Where am I in all of this?

I’m at a point in my life where I’ve never felt so focused and so driven towards goals I’ve set for myself. I find it incredibly difficult to focus on the present when I have so many things I want to accomplish.

My days go by incredibly fast as I fight to complete the tasks presented by my responsibilities and my desires.

I struggle to find time for those I care about, to breathe, and to enjoy this moment in which I exist.

It’s unfortunate because I know that I am in a very good moment, and I do not want to look back on this time in hindsight and wish I had done things differently.

I’m caught in a whirlwind with time slipping through my fingers. “If only I had more hours in a day,” I think to myself.

All I can do is breathe, and find my edge.
