I’m really proud of my online fitness program, JohnnyFit Online. As I browse the internet looking for inspiration and ideas for making it even better, I notice that there aren’t many trainers with anything like it. How did it evolve into the way I train hundreds of clients, with the potential to reach thousands? Today, I’m going to tell you how P90x and Steve Maxwell influenced my online fitness program.
Two of the biggest names in fitness videos both had a big role in shaping what JohnnyFit Online has become, but probably not how you think.
The Biggest Names In Fitness
There is no argument that P90X, by Beachbody, are the most popular fitness videos ever. P90X has sold more copies than humans can count to. Many of Beachbody’s other programs are really popular too, and with good reason. Their programs deliver results, and they offer a wide selection of styles to choose from.
My own experience with P90X started about 8 or 9 years ago. I went through the program a couple of times. It was brutally effective. Most of the workouts run kind of long, but if you can stay consistent with the program, you get results.
Eventually, I got bored doing the same videos over and over. I decided to start subbing out some days with other workouts, like kettlebells. Hunting down kettlebell videos led me to guys like Steve Maxwell, and Mike Mahler. Guys who have been involved with kettlebell training in the United States longer than just about anyone.
I watched as many of their videos as I could find. I did receive a lot of great information from both of them. To this day, I teach the Turkish Get Up from a top down approach after learning it from Steve Maxwell. Having taught it both ways to clients, I know that they grasp the top down approach faster.
Beachbody has a lot of style and flash. They have average, aesthetic trainers tailored to their target demographics. Whereas Steve Maxwell has very low production value to his videos, but could train circles around a Beachbody trainer.
So, here I am with thousands of teaching hours under my belt, a reputation for precise alignment instruction in weight training and yoga, and the aptitude to put together my own program. I knew I was every bit of trainer that the Beachbody ones are, and that I could definitely produce a better quality video than Maxwell and Mahler. “I should be making my own videos!”
This was the reason why I never became a Beachbody coach. You know, those people who lose 10 lbs, and then try to talk you into buying DVDs from them? I knew that if I spent as much time creating my own products and online fitness program, I would be better off in the long run than joining the subculture of multi level marketers.
Instead of letting myself be fooled into thinking that I was an entrepreneur by selling someone else’s products, I decided to become a certified personal trainer, 500 hour registered yoga teacher, and run my own training studio for 2 years.
Instead of making video recommendations based upon your viewing preferences, I can make modifications and adjustments for you based on what your body actually needs. Any of my online clients can contact me directly any time by using a question and answer box next to every workout in my membership area. They ask me fitness questions that aren’t first run through my marketing department. Not that I have a marketing department.
By the way, P90X still comes in DVDs. I don’t know who’s still buying DVDs, but you need to stop it now! Those things are going to become records, faster than records did. I just bought a brand new laptop for work. Because it’s for work, I made sure to get a good one. Guess what? It doesn’t have a disc drive at all. I’m not going to get a separate one. I don’t need one or want one.
Online Fitness Program
I want to store stuff like that in the cloud and access it anywhere I have internet. I don’t want more things that I need shelves for, when I’m trying to live as a minimalist.
While Beachbody is selling DVDs, and all the packaging that comes with them, you can do my program on any internet ready device, and have to deal with zero waste.
So, that’s the story of how P90X and Steve Maxwell influenced JohnnyFit Online. On my worst day, I’m as good as a Beachbody trainer, and I’m slicker at editing and presenting video than Steve Maxwell. I’ll tell you about how I built the platform, and what I used to do it on another day.
Even though I talked a little shit on both of them, I respect Beachbody because their programs have helped thousands of people lead healthier lives, and I respect Steve Maxwell because he really is one of the most knowledgeable and best trainers in the world. I’m grateful to their inspiration in any way that it came.
